Here at Highland Baptist Church, we have a Deacon “Body”, not a Deacon “Board”. ‘What’s the difference?’, you ask?
| “There arose a complaint…because their widows were neglected.” ACTS 6:1 |
A board is usually associated with overseers or administrators of an organization. But the first deacons were formed to serve, to minister to the needs of the church body, as recorded in Acts 6:1-8. In fact, the original need that the creation of deacons came out of was to minister to the needs of widows. This is one of our primary purposes and ministries, as deacons to the people of Highland Baptist Church. The church is a body, with needs. Our deacons are a body of its own, formed to meet the needs of our church body. We take our role, and the scriptural qualifications for being a member of this serving body, very seriously. We uphold the standards set in 1 Timothy 3:8-13 regarding the selection of deacons. In our regular meetings, we take turns in providing devotional thoughts to keep us focused on our walk with the one who calls us, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Take a look at the information listed here (be sure to look at our Deacon Ministry Teams page), and see who we are and what we are up to. If you have any questions, or a need, please don’t hesitate to call upon us.
Our Deacon Purpose Statement
The purpose of the deacon is as follows: “To glorify God as servants of the church, being obedient to God, through serving with the pastor, to minister to the needs of the body of Christ.”
A deacon is “one who serves.” The deacon body is a ministering body, which is responsible for the care and service of church members.
As a body, we uphold our church doctrinal statement.
Highland Baptist Church Statement of Doctrine
Any person can become a Christian by believing that Jesus Christ is Lord and he is God’s son. They must repent of their sins and ask for God’s forgiveness and allow Christ to live in their heart and be the Lord of their life. Rom. 10:9-13
The Bible is God’s word that was written by different people who were directed and guided by the Holy Spirit. It is the resource Book for the Christian and the church teaching us how we should live and love as Christ did. We believe there is only one living and true God who is our Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God in human form who came to earth to be sacrificed for the sins of man. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who was sent after Christ died so he would be present spiritually everywhere. He comforts us and works in us to help us become like Christ.
The church is the Body of Christ, constituted by him and for him. It is a group of believers who support, minister and disciple people to Christ-like maturity. We are to spread the word of Jesus Christ throughout the world.
Jesus Christ was born of a virgin chosen by God. It was the one and only virgin birth. After Christ was crucified and buried he rose on the third day in bodily form and appeared to Mary Magdalene. Christ will return again visibly with a loud command to gather all believers in Christ together to meet him face to face and spend eternity with him. Jesus said that he would not lose even one person whom the Father has given him. Anyone who makes a personal sincere commitment to believe in Jesus Christ as Savior is secure in God’s promise of eternal life. (John 6:39)
The ordinances of the Baptist church are the Lord’s Supper and Baptism by immersion. The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby believers through partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of Christ. Baptism symbolizes the cleansing of our sins by the blood of Jesus Christ.
All Christians should follow the example of Christ for everyone around us to see.
