“Lion of the Senate” To Be Laid to Rest Tomorrow
Ted Kennedy, the liberal senator whose tenure lasted 47 years, died from brain cancer this week. He was 77.
Following his wishes, tomorrow his body will be buried in Arlington Cemetery near the grave sites of his brothers. He is now in the presence of his ultimate Judge. What matters now? What did he do with Jesus Christ?
As we contemplate the eternal destiny of Senator Ted Kennedy, hopefully he found the Savior his mother, Rose, did. She was the much-admired matriarch of the clan.
After the birth of Rosemary, her retarded daughter, she became very bitter and cynical. On an evening when she was acting terribly, one of her maids lovingly confronted her about her attitude. She told Mrs. Kennedy: “You’ll never be happy until you make your heart a manger where the Christ child may be born.” In a rage Mrs. Kennedy fired the maid.
But the words convicted her all through the night.
Early in the morning she knelt by her bed and prayed her heart would be indeed a manger where Christ could be born. She pointed to that as her conversion experience. And, she rehired the maid! I hope there was a time when her son, Ted, made his heart a manger where Christ could be born.
