Civility In The Church

Two of the greatest preachers in Christian history were John Wesley and George Whitfield. The two had sharp differences in theology.
A lady once asked Wesley, “Do you expect to see Whitfield in heaven?”
Wesley replied, “No madam.”
“Ah,” she sighed, “I was afraid you would say that.”
Then Wesley added with great earnestness, “He will stand so near the throne that one like me will hardly be able to get a glimpse of him.”
I’ve read the illustration both ways. I’m not sure if Wesley said that of Whitfield or Whitfield said it of Wesley. But, either way, what a demonstration of Christian civility, graciousness and love.
It is fine for us to discuss, debate and disagree on points of doctrine. But, we must always do so with Christian civility and graciousness. Civility, graciousness and kindness are desperately needed in the church as well as in our culture.
